  • 17025

    NZS/ISO/IEC 17025 covers the "General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories". NZS/ISO/IEC 17025 assures the customer that: procedures used, and results issued, by a laboratory are technically valid; an effective quality system is in use; and staff are competent.

  • AC

    Alternating Current
    An electric current that reverses its direction at regularly recurring intervals.

  • Accuracy

    The closeness of an indication or reading of equipment to the actual value of the quantity being measured. A typical accuracy statement may combine a % of reading, % of range, n * digits, etc.

  • Ambient Temperature

    The average or mean temperature of the surrounding air which comes in contact with the equipment and instruments under test.

  • Ampere

    The unit of measure (A) used to define the rate of flow of electricity (current) in a circuit (one coulomb (6.25 x 108 electronics) per second). Also know as an Amp.

  • ANSI

    American National Standards Institute
    Coordinates the development and use of voluntary consensus standards in the United States and represents the needs and views of U.S. stakeholders in standardization forums around the globe.

  • APLAC

    Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation
    APLAC groups accreditation bodies in the Asia Pacific region responsible for accrediting calibration, testing and inspection facilities.

  • AS/NZS 3760

    In-service Safety Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment is a joint Australia and New Zealand Standard. This standard specifies in-service safety inspection and testing protocols and criteria that satisfy the OSH obligations of employers and employees, and provides a cost effective approach to safety without jepoardising the safety of personnel or involving excessive equipment downtime.

  • Bandwidth

    The frequency range between frequency points at which the signal is attenuated by 3 dB.

  • BMC

    Best Measurement Capabilities
    The highest level of calibration or measurement accuracy available to a customer, provided by the calibration laboratory.

  • Calibration

    A set of operations, under specified environmental conditions, that establish the relationship between measured values of the equipment under test and the corresponding values of the reference standards or materials.

  • Conductance

    The measure of the ability of a material or solution to carry an electrical current. Unit of measure is the Siemens (S).

  • Confidence Interval

    The range of values that encompases the standard uncertainty multiplied by the coverage factor. In the formula below, ± ks represents the confidence interval.

    value = m ± ks

    value
    = value of the measurement
    m = measurement (or mean of measurements)
    k = coverage factor
    s = standard uncertainty

  • Coverage Factor

    A numerical factor k is used as a multiplier of the combined standard uncertainty in order to obtain an expanded uncertainty. In general, the value of the coverage factor k is chosen on the basis of the desired level of confidence to be associated with a measurement. With a normal distribution, k=2 giving a level of confidence of approximately 95 % that the measured value m is within ± ks of the value.

    value = m ± ks

    value = value of the measurement
    m = measurement (or mean of measurements)
    k = coverage factor
    s = standard uncertainty

  • Current

    The rate of flow of electricity. The unit of measure is the ampere (A).

  • DC

    Direct Current
    An electric current flowing in one direction only and constant in value.

  • Decibel

    The decibel (dB) is a logarithmic unit used to describe a ratio of power, voltage, etc.

  • Digit

    A measure of the display span of a meter. By convention, a full digit can assume any value from 0 through 9, a 1⁄2-digit will display a 1 and overload at 2, a 3⁄4-digit will display digits up to 3 and overload at 4, etc. For example, a meter with a display span of ±399 counts is said to be a "2 and 3⁄4 digit" meter.

  • DUT

    Device Under Test
    The item of equipment being calibrated. Also know as "UUT" (Unit Under Test).

  • ESD

    ElectroStatic Discharge
    The rapid, spontaneous transfer of electrostatic charge induced by a high electrostatic field.
    Electrostatic Sensitive Device
    Any component which is prone to damage by static electricity charges which build up on people, tools, packaging, etc.

  • Estimated Uncertainty

    See "Expanded Uncertainty".

  • Expanded Uncertainty

    The quantity defining an interval about the measurement m, that may be expected to encompass a large percentage of the distribution of values (typically 95% or greater) that could reasonably be attributed to the measured value. In the formula below, ks represents the expanded uncertainty.

    value = m ± ks

    value
    = value of the measurement
    m = measurement (or mean of measurements)
    k = coverage factor
    s = standard uncertainty

  • Frequency

    The number of cycles over a specified time period over which an event occurs. Unit of measure is the Hertz (Hz).

  • Hertz

    Units (Hz) in which frequency is expressed.

  • IANZ

    International Accreditation New Zealand
    The New Zealand national authority for the accreditation of testing laboratories, radiology services, and inspection services. promote the development and maintenance of good practices in testing and inspection, maintaining a registration scheme for those organisations accredited.
